Lynn asked me to update you all on what was said at the Orange County Legislative Delegation Meeting held today.

Mary Jo Markel, who is one of the Pershing parents, brought the issue of school closings related to the Unitary Status Ruling, to the attention of this committee.  She had three minutes to speak and gave the committee as much background information on the issue of the 21 schools that are up for possible closure.  (She did an incredible job)

Orange County school officials did not bow to lawmakers' demands to promise to preserve campuses in a controversial school-merger plan Monday, but in the end, legislators could get their way.

In the latest battle that pits politician against educator over the control of local schools, state Rep. Andy Gardiner, R-Orlando, called on the Orange County School Board to justify a plan to close and merge some schools and to promise not to sell surplus land to developers if it moves forward.

The letter writing campaign is off and running. PLEASE continue to write to the OCSB members and state your opinion and solutions to the possible community school closure/ merger ideas. Currently, all homeowners need to write letters to their City and County Commissioners about this topic. They should also remain informed and updated about the communities in which they represent.

OCSB DISCUSSES POSSIBLE SCHOOL CLOSURES

On October 30, 2006, the Orange County School Board held the latest in a series of workshops focused on "unitary status." Due to court orders dating from as early as the 1960s, the Orange County School Board has been working towards obtaining unitary status for all its schools to eliminate all vestiges of discrimination and inequality in the areas of school assignment, faculty qualifications, transportation, facilities, educational programs and extracurricular activities. As throngs of Orlando parents gear up to fight a plan to close elementary schools, those at one east Orange campus say, 'Take ours.'

Parents from Engelwood Elementary don't care whether the district razes, merges or rebuilds the school -- to them, anything is better than what they have.

'We're tired of being ignored,' PTA President Rita Ortiz said.

Tuesday, parents of students at Pershing Elementary put together a flyer and a town hall meeting. They are getting ready for a fight they never imagined.

Pershing Elementary is an "A" school. It isn't overcrowded and it's minutes from their homes.

"That's why we moved here, so our kids wouldn't have to take a bus to school. So they could walk and be with their friends," said parent Mary Asbury.


But the Orange County School District is considering closing Pershing because it's too small. With just 400 students, it's far below the district ideal of 700.
